Morning routine vs. evening routine: what do you really need?
Do you really need different products for morning and night? The answer is nuanced: some active ingredients are indeed more relevant at one time of day than another, due to how the skin regenerates and reacts to external aggressions.
Why distinguish between morning and evening?
During the day, the skin is exposed to external aggressions: UV, pollution, temperature variations. The priority in the morning is therefore protection.
At night, the skin enters a more active cycle of cellular regeneration. This is the ideal time to use repair and renewal active ingredients, which can also increase photosensitivity (and therefore be contraindicated during the day without adequate protection).
The morning routine
Goal: protect and prepare the skin for the day
- Gentle cleanser — to remove night residues without irritating the skin
- Antioxidant serum (vitamin C, for example) — to combat oxidative stress during the day ahead
- Light moisturizer
- Sunscreen — the non-negotiable step, even in winter or on cloudy days
To avoid in the morning: strong exfoliating active ingredients (retinol, high-concentration glycolic acid) without adequate sun protection afterwards, as they increase the skin's sensitivity to UV rays.
The evening routine
Goal: deep cleansing and promoting regeneration
- Makeup removal and deep cleansing — to remove makeup, pollution, and excess sebum accumulated during the day
- Renewal active ingredient (retinol, glycolic acid) — this is the ideal time to use them, without the risk of immediate sun exposure
- Hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid)
- Occlusive cream or oil — to seal in hydration overnight
What about sunscreen in the evening?
Unnecessary: sunscreen is only useful when exposed to UV rays. Applying it in the evening provides no benefit and can even unnecessarily burden the skin.
Do you absolutely need two different routines?
Not necessarily in absolute terms — a simple and consistent routine all day is better than a complex routine poorly followed. But if you want to optimize the effectiveness of your active ingredients, respecting this morning/evening distinction allows you to get the most out of each ingredient when it is most useful.
Our recommendation
Start simple: a basic morning routine (cleanser, light antioxidant serum, sunscreen) and a basic evening routine (cleanser, targeted active, moisturizer). Then gradually adjust according to your skin's specific needs, rather than multiplying the steps from the start.
